Little Gorilla had spent the whole morning playing reading games. He didn’t mean to only read, but afterward Mommy Gorilla said, “ Little Gorilla, you need some math.”
“ I don’t want to do my math!” Little Gorilla answered.
“ Math is fun,” said Mommy Gorilla, and she took him to the Math Gardens to do math problems. “I really don’t want to do any math!” he cried again, and he raced to the hanging vines.
First, Little gorilla went to visit his best friend Little Monkey. They wrote poems and did science experiments. Little Gorilla wasn’t as good at math as Little Monkey, and when he didn’t do his math, Little Monkey noticed.
Then Mommy Monkey shouted, “ Math time Little Monkey and Little Gorilla too!”
“I don’t want to do my math!” cried Little Gorilla, and with a hint of embarrassment on his face, he darted past Mommy Monkey towards some leafy bushes to hide in.
Next, Little Gorilla went to play with his old pal Little Bear. They crawled through the bushes hunting for berries to paint with. Little Gorilla got lots of compliments on his artwork.
Then Daddy Bear growled, “ You two should do some math!”
“ I don’t want to do my math!” said Little Gorilla, and taking a last glance at his art, he scurried past Daddy Bear making a bee – line for the water hole.
At the water hole Little Gorilla met his close friend, Little Elephant. They started to make a mud castle, and Little Elephant built one right next to it. Then Daddy Elephant trumpeted, “ You two need to do some math.”
“ I don’t want to do my math!” said Little Gorilla, thinking only of getting out of there, scampered past the elephants toward the long grasses in the plains’. Little Gorilla visited his new friend Little Rhino next. They played hide-and-seek for hours in the high grass, and little Gorilla loved this game more than anything in the world. Then Mommy Rhino called, “ Math time boys!”
“I don’t want to do my math!” said Little Gorilla, and with a wave of his arms, he raced past the Rhinos back into the jungle.
“ Mommy Gorilla will wonder what I was up to,” thought Little Gorilla. For-seeing his trouble, he went home with sorrow. Wait, what as that?
Little Gorilla enamored at … a magnificent peacock showing off his tail.
“ How amazing,” gasped Little Gorilla. “ Want to come play with me?” The peacock shook his head in disgust.
“ Read with you?” he said. “No thanks!”
“ ‘Why not?” asked Little Gorilla in astonishment.
“ You never do any math and I don’t even think you have ever done it,” said the peacock rudely. “You need some math!” With a toss of his head, he trotted off.
“ What a hideous thing to say,” thought Little Gorilla. “ I don’t need any math.”
Little Gorilla wandered on until he spotted the numeracy gardens. Romping around with his friends made him interested in math, and he stopped to have a look. “ What’s that?” he cried, spotting a strange division flower. “ Who could do that? Nobody is that smart.”
He leaned closer getting more and more curious… and he soon knew the answer, 64! Little Gorilla was overjoyed. “ It was easy!” he shouted, “What a goof I am.” At last Little Gorilla did his math. He wandered through the quiet garden looking for more equations to solve. It was fun just like Mommy Gorilla said. Once he was done, Little Gorilla scampered out of the garden admiring the great vines in the entrance. Wouldn’t all the parents be proud! Right then Little Leopard tumbled by. “ Hi Little Gorilla,” he roared. “ Will you come play with me?”
Little Gorilla looked at Little Leopard and shook his head. “No thanks,” he said. “ You and I play a lot, you have never done any math. You need some math!” And with a swish of his tail, Little Gorilla raced home
